अप्रैल 1837 में, जब पूरी अफगान सेना ने जमरौद पर हमला किया था, अचानक प्राणघातक घायल होने पर नलवा ने अपने नुमायंदे महान सिंह को आदेश दिया कि जब तक सहायता के लिये नयी सेना का आगमन ना हो जाये उनकी मृत्यु की घोषणा ना की जाये जिससे कि सैनिक हतोत्साहित ना हो और वीरता से डटे रहे।
